Hospital Support

Chemo is never fun but chemo at State Hospitals it can be an ordeal! A wait, may be hours long, in a crowded area on not very comfortable chairs. This after a long journey in the early morning to get a place in the queue. Then, after blood tests and chemo, the journey home – sometimes only getting there late in the afternoon.
Wherever possible, support is given to patients at the oncology clinics at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and at the Far East Rand Hospital. This may take the form of chatting with patients in need of encouragement and non-medical advice and sometimes arranging gifts for patients on special days.
CanSurvive has a support group which meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at P4 in the Charlotte Maxeke Radiation clinic. All patients are welcome no matter what cancer they have.
At the Far East Rand Hospital, support is available for prostate patients on Mondays and Thursdays from 08:00.
